Projects Honored For Design and Sustainability

Judges continue to honor WSKF Architects projects for their architectural and sustainable design. As part of the 2011 Design Excellence Awards sponsored by Anthem Publishing, judges awarded the 42,000-square-foot Freda Markley Early Childhood Center the Gold Award for Architecture/Contemporary and the Bronze Award in the Green category.

Earlier, judges for the Mid-America Regional Council (MARC) honored Freda Markley ECC as a Sustainable Success Story for the facility’s excellence in energy efficiency and conservation. Designed by WSKF Principal Mark Spurgeon, the center features design strategies, materials, building systems and other elements expected to significantly reduce energy and water use compared to a typical building of its size.

Additionally, judges for the Association of Licensed Architects’ annual Design Awards selected Prince of Peace Missionary Baptist Church for a Merit Award in the national design competition.  John Freshnock, who heads WSKF’s church design team, led development of a master plan for this Midtown Kansas City church and renovation. The result is a church that is modern and forward looking with timeless forms and clean lines that culminated in a place of worship that would inspire.
