WSKF Designs Spaces That Blend Food, Fun and Recreation

Two restaurant operators turned to WSKF Architects to design spaces that set them apart in the marketplace with concepts that blend food, fun and recreation.

They are Chicken N’ Pickle, a new North Kansas City restaurant and sports/game establishment, and Donutology, a Kansas City shop where customers can create their own custom donuts.

“Our design for both of these spaces reflects the vision of owners who sought their own distinctive design to complement their experiential food concepts,” says John Freshnock, WSKF Architects principal. “At Chicken N’ Pickle that is a restaurant paired with indoor/outdoor pickleball courts and other games while Donutology allows customers to customize their donuts with different icings and other toppings.”

Following the opening of the Chicken N’ Pickle courts last fall, the restaurant opened in early 2017. It features wood-fired rotisserie chicken, sandwiches, salads and a menu of side dishes. Adjacent to the restaurant/bar are four indoor and four outdoor courts for pickleball, which shares aspects of other racquet sports. “It’s all one cohesive complex where customers can eat, have a drink, use the courts or play other games. With the indoor courts, they are able to operate year-round,” Freshnock says.

Donutology offers a new take on the decades-old donut shop. This new concept lets customers create their own mini donuts customized with flavors, icing and other toppings of their choosing. Donutology is located in the former Tower Cleaners building in Kansas City’s popular Westport area. WSKF worked with the owner to repurpose the building in to a fun and entertaining space. “We achieved that through color choices, materials, finishes, colorful graphics, lighting fixtures, furniture, signing and other elements,” Freshnock says. “You can order donuts in any number of places. At Donutology it’s about making it an experience.”
