First Baptist Church of North Kansas City

First Baptist Church had an overall master plan in place when WSKF was commissioned to explore multiple options for the first phase of the plan while respecting the long-term goals of the overall plan. The primary goal of the first phase is to create a flexible worship experience that respects the history of the church while looking forward. The sanctuary is in need of new HVAC equipment and distribution, lighting, and accessibility upgrades. The redesign of the sanctuary needed to allow for flexibility and create a single space that, with cohesive seating arrangements, would bring the congregation closer to the presider and together as a group. Also important was the desire to open the church to the community, both literally and figuratively. We accomplish this by opening the west facade and creating a new entry that opens to an expanded gathering space. Accessibility was enhanced by adding ramps and creating a new “front porch” that allows for a shared experience of entry and exit for the disabled and the able. Historic stained glass will be relocated and highlighted in the worship space.
