Kansas City Museum/Zona Rosa Igloo
LOCATION:
Kansas City, Mo.
SIZE:
From the mid-1950s to the early 1980s a realistic igloo was part of a Kansas City Museum exhibit called Eskimoland. It was beloved by generations of children in this region. If only for awhile it transported young visitors to a faraway Arctic world. As part of a broader effort to bring back Kansas City holiday traditions of years gone by, the Zona Rosa shopping center commissioned WSKF Architects to recreate the igloo. The realistic-looking igloo features seating inside, LED lighting, sound and windows. The igloo blends history, fun and retail showmanship to create a holiday attraction that is whimsical and a true fantasy adventure for the young and young at heart. The igloo and its backdrop were designed to be disassembled for easy movement and storage. The artist Scribe painted the mural and the igloo based on photos of the original.
