Senior Living Principles
Our interior designers Michelle Travers, Lauren Cunningham and Leslie Bodtcher design interior environments that balance resident care and comfort with operational and staff needs.
How We Advance Senior Care/Living Facility Design
WSKF Architects’ portfolio of $180 million in senior care/living facilities includes the full range of care — from independent living, assisted living and skilled nursing to memory care — for the public and private markets. As the leader of our senior care/living design team, Dalyn Novak brings expertise and experience from designing and leading a wide array of senior living projects. We continue to build on the knowledge and expertise gained from having designed more 4,000 units and 40 new, renovated or expanded senior care communities. Our approach to senior care facility design is one of balancing the needs of residents and those of owners/operators. Resident considerations include privacy, comfort, dignity, safety and security. Owner/operator considerations include market and brand positioning, operational and staff needs, first and long-term costs, and maintenance. Before we start design we undertake a focused process to gain an in-depth understanding of these issuesListening is at the Center of How We Work
The needs and operations of senior care facilities are far from static. That’s why we are constantly working to raise the bar in design and expanding our knowledge and expertise. Our approach to design begins with the simple notion of listening. Our process begins with something seemingly simple: listening. We seek input from owners/operators and the full range of caregivers. “We focus on meaningful engagement of leaders and staff, documenting their feedback and ensuring their input guides all of our design work,” explains Dalyn Novak, principal and leader of our Senior Care Design Team. We see a central part of the design process as problem solving. In senior care facilities solving for:-
- Resident care, comfort and security
- Resident physical and mental health
- Staff needs and operational protocols
- Infection control, fall prevention and other safety issues
- Low maintenance and operational costs
Our process is one of collaboration with facility leadership and front-line staff. Our goal is to help them make informed decisions about how best to invest their budget.
Our team works closely with facility owners to design a range of exterior and interior amenities that help set their senior care/living community apart in the marketplace.
